In penance for there being no trope this week, I offer up this newly released trailer for Iron Man 3.

As Iron Man 2, while still fun, was a bit of a step down quality wise from the first movie, I haven’t been quite as excited about this.  But Downey was a blast in The Avengers and this trailer puts Iron Man 3 squarely back on the I Can’t Wait List.

It…looks…AWESOME!  Ooo, Pepper in distress, Tony’s hair, seriously creepy iron man suit with no Tony!  Yay!  And what’s up with the huge bunny in the back of the explosion?  Watch it again.  You’ll see.

The Hobbit: In case you haven’t heard, after much speculation Peter Jackson confirmed that The Hobbit will be expanded into three movies instead of the originally planned two.  Despite my love and trust for Jackson and the whole Lord of the Rings team, my response to this announcement is a big weary sigh.

I know they had lots of extra footage from Lord of the Rings, thus the 3 hour theatrical releases and the 4 hour extended cuts (which I consider the True Movies) but the Lord of the Rings books were more than 3 times longer than The Hobbit.  Once again they have lots of extra footage, as well as details they want to pull from the Appendices; Tolkien wrote volumes of notes about Middle Earth outside of his novels.  Although I remain skeptical, I already know that Jackson, et al will be getting a lot of my money over the next couple of years.  They probably just tripled the amount.

First footage for the Sherlock Holmes sequel premiered on Entertainment Tonight a day or 2 ago, but it’s quality (the footage itself, not the movie) was so poor I didn’t bother with it, knowing the trailer couldn’t be far behind.  And here it is.  I was a little concerned, before viewing, that it might be a bit too explode-y.  I liked the action in the first movie but I don’t think fans want to see the series depart too much from what made Sherlock, well, Sherlock; namely, his wits!  The story still seems like great fun and all the working elements from the first movie seem to be here, especially the chemistry between Holmes & Watson.

A second production video blog has been posted on Peter Jackson’s Facebook page.  Another ten minutes full of behind the scenes.  It’s really amazing how much work and coordination have to go into these films but it shows in the end products.  Also nice to see a lot of the major players in the crew returning like DP Andrew Lesnie, Tolkien artists John Howe & Alan Lee, and Art Director Dan Henneh.  Yay!

In case you didn’t know, they are currently filming J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit in New Zealand.  After several years of pre-production woes, lawsuits, and a revolving door of directors, filming finally started in March. Peter Jackson, who was originally slated as producer, is directing. All is well with the world. The man who spent more than a decade bringing The Lord of the Rings Trilogy to the screen should be in charge of its prequel. The Lord of the Rings had a huge impact on me creatively, spiritually, and in many other ways.  The commitment, passion, craftsmanship, and excellence poured into that story is inspiring.  And it appears the same care is being taken with The Hobbit. As proof, I offer this squeal-inducing video published on The Hobbit Blog a few months ago which you can watch here.

I’m happy to report that a huge number of the original cast are returning, at least appropriate cast.  This story takes place 60 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings so most of the hobbits have not even been born yet.  Ian McKellan returns as Gandalf, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Hugo Weaving as Elrond, and Andy Serkis as Gollum.  Great start! Andy Serkis has also been announced as the second unit director.  Go, Andy! I was a little disturbed that Elijah Wood was listed as Frodo since Frodo does not appear in the story but Ian Holm is also listed as Old Bilbo so there must be a new scene from his later years. In the starring role of Bilbo is Martin Freeman , of Hitchhiker’s Guide and Love Actually fame; perfect in my opinion. Richard Armitage (North and South) plays the dwarf Thorin.  Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies) is Thranduil, father of Legolas and they’ve recently announced that Evangeline Lily (Lost) will play an elf as well. I have mixed feelings about this last one.  As an obsessive Lost fan I want her to do well but she seems very All-American girl. My real problem may be with how Kate’s character was written in the later seasons of Lost. We’ll see.

There was a rumor going around that David Tennant (Doctor Who) had been cast as an elf but this is apparently nothing but rumor.  I’m very sad.     See the sad little face I just made.

Finally, the first official production photos were released today at EW.com.  Check them out and let the gleeful squealing begin!

The Hobbit is being divided into two movies.  An Unexpected Journey is scheduled to open December 2012 and There And Back Again is scheduled for  December 2013.

Another trailer is out.  They just keep getting more epic!  (epicer?)  And adding new footage as well.

 Besides sheer bliss, I have two responses to this latest peek; 1. A tiny bit of concern with how they have messed with the final showdown between Harry and Voldemort.  How Voldermort dies was very brilliantly and subtly developed by Rowling through all seven books.  I’m talking about how Harry stays true to his character and values to the end, not that nonsense about who owns the Elder Wand.  I’ll be upset if the filmmakers abandon that in order to “up the ante”.  2. Gratitude that the filmmakers saw the value in getting the finest actors in Britain to play the adult roles and that those actors agreed to take the parts even though they were often in tiny roles supporting underage actors.  If rumor serves, most of them will get their moments in this finale.  Obviously, Alan Rickman will shine but just look at Julie Walters about to… OK, no spoilers for those who don’t know.   Take a peek.  HP7P2 opens July 15th!
