I’m foregoing the live blog this year as it keeps me from actually enjoying the show itself. Instead I’m tracking random thoughts that pop up during the night.

5:34pm – While 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis is not short on attitude, I do love that she picked her dress because it was “sparkly and fluffy” and that she didn’t let a stylist talk her out of carrying a puppy purse named Sammy.

5:45pm – It’s Daniel Radcliffe! Cutiepie! And, bless his heart, one of the few people shorter than Ryan Seacrest.

5:59pm – How cute is it that Joseph Gordon-Levitt came with Sally Fields? I’m always surprised how low his voice is.

6:18pm – So 49-year-old Helen Hunt looks old and 75-year-old Jane Fonda looks fabulous!

6:47pm – We’ve been on this remote location with still photos for a while now. Did E! News loose their live feed?

6:49pm – Oh, ABC started at 6:30 this year instead of 7. Bummer, their red carpet coverage is never as good.

6:50pm – I take it back. Hugh Jackman picking up Kristen Chenoweth and his wife in each arm is pretty cute.

7:05pm – Oh my gosh, I love Adele and her accent! I can’t understand a word she’s saying.

7:07pm – Oops, audio difficulties. Guess you don’t cut Sandra Bullock off so you can adjust your settings.

7:40pm – Nice! Seth McFarlane you’re winning me over. Long but very funny opening.

8:05pm – Hellooooo Avengers! That’s a whole lotta yum.

8:27pm – Wow, I didn’t know you could make James Bond so boring but this montage…zzzz…

9:19pm – Great Sound of Music gag!

10:03pm – Well hello, Barbra.

10:32pm – I like Seth McFarlane but this is becoming a rather boring telecast.

10:44pm – Oh, Jennifer Lawrence, I think you’re the most authentic person in the room. You make even a fall work for you!

10:45pm – Smart and funny intro for Meryl Streep.

10:51pm – Daniel Day-Lewis is eloquent and charming as always.

10:53p – How fun! Michelle Obama. I really like her.

11:02pm – Seth/Kristen, you guys are cute but we’re tired, please don’t expect us to sit through you closing number.

11:03pm – High points (Seth’s humor, some of the musical numbers) and low points (boring montages, some of the musical numbers) make this year a mixed bag. What were your favorite moments?

See ya next year!

Happy 100th Birthday, Gene Kelly! You’ve given me many happy hours over the years.

Choosing what clip to share is incredibly difficult when there are so many great moments. Most people associate Kelly with the movie Singing in the Rain and its iconic title number. And that is a classic routine. And just as fascinating behind the scenes. (Kelly had a fever of 103 while performing; they added milk to the water to make it show up on camera) But as awesome as it is, I don’t think it’s the best number in the movie cause the film is packed with great performances. I’m always torn between Fit As A Fiddle and Moses as the best. Here’s Moses so you can see for your self. Along with Kelly’s smooth, sexy moves, notice co-star and cutie-pie comic Donald O’Connor match every step. I also love their chemistry as best friends who’ve grown up together.

And here’s an adorable number with Jerry Mouse. Great work from both Kelly and the animators to make this work.

Sigh…

But here are some (very) brief thoughts on tonight’s show:

Best Presenters/Most Adorable Couple: William H Macy and Felicity Huffman who sang their way through Best Actress in a TV Series - you can see and hear them here

Best Dressed: (giving it to a young ‘un this year) Shailene Woodley

Here’s to another great year of movies! Happy viewing!

Update

I almost forgot! Hottest Grandma: (another tough category)74-year-old Jane Fonda

By now you know that Sandra Bullock won the Oscar for Best Actress Sunday night. Her acceptance speech was humble and touching and she looked fabulous. But did you know that she also received another prestigous award on Saturday and by winning both back to back she actually set a record?

On Saturday the annual Razzie Awards were held in Los Angeles to celebrate the very worst Hollywood has to offer. Bullock was nominated for her performance in All About Steve and, in keeping with her self-depricating humor, she showed up to accept. She was charming and her appearance was the highlight of the evening. You can check it out below. And, yes, she is the only actor to win an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year.

Here we go again!

7:06 pm – Of course they all look gorgeous but Sandra Bullock looks great! That’s a winner’s dress. Just my little prediction.

7:22 pm – Does Miley Cyrus even know who Kathy Ireland is?

7:43 pm – Yay! Finally a funny opening act…and Doogie to boot!

8:03 pm – Best Original Song catergory – What is Paris 36? Never heard of it. Must look it up.

8:22 pm – Wow. John Hughes tribute. He really was a genius. He evented the teen comedy and most of those actors have gone on to have successful careers.

8:40 pm – Ben Stiller dressed as a Navi from Avatar; a strange mixture of funny & “meh”.

9:08 pm – OK, didn’t want Avatar to win for Art Direction but when one of the winners says he was told 13 years ago he would die soon, I can’t be upset about him having his moment.

9:10 pm – Woohoo! The Young Victoria wins for Best Costume Design! So happy they won one.

9:27 pm – Hurt Locker is starting to pick up some awards, both Sound awards. This either means they really have a shot at Best Pic or the Academy has given them the lesser awards as a consolation prize.

9:35 pm – First they make poor Sandra Bullock present when she’s got to be crazy nervous. Then they DON’T have clips of the cinematographer’s works. Then they give it to… Avatar?! I’m sorry but that was animation, not cinematography. Ugh. Nice slap in the face to DP’s everywhere.

9:47 pm – So we get bits of each nominated score (Go Sherlock/Hans Zimmer!) punctuated with weird dancers but no cinematography clips. Yes, I’m still complaining.

9:51 pm – I. love. movie. scores!

9:52 pm – Congrats, Mr. Giacchino! You are talented and Up was nice but my favorite score of yours this year was Star Trek.

9:55 pm – Love, love Zoe Saldana’s dress!

10:15 pm – What’s with the lampshades?

10:17 pm – Wow. Only the big four left. The telecast is on time. Another sign of the apocalypse.

10:24 pm – Ya know, really gorgeous set design this year.

10:32 pm – Lovely intros for all the Best Actor nominees.

10:35 pm – Jeff Bridges is still The Dude.

10:47 pm – Uh oh, it’s Sean Penn. Insert sense of humor here.

10:48 pm – My sister just asked, “When is his surgery?” me, “He’s having surgery?” Wendy, “To remove that stick in his a**.”

10:49 pm – You go, Sandra! Gracious speech. And touching too.

10:55 pm – YES! First female Best Director! Well deserved.

10:59 pm – I cannot believe Hurt Locker beat Avatar! Again, well deserved.

11:02 pm – Overall, very good ceremony. And no cheesy opening song that names every single star.
