Randomness: So What Is Lens Flare? And Why Should I Care?

Chick 2 can explain this better than I but for our loyal readers who are wondering, “What is lens flare and why should I care?”  Here are a couple of examples of flare from the Star Trek movie.  (No, it’s not something they make the waiters at Chotsky’s wear.)  I’ll leave the technical explanations to Wendy Jo.

I loved the movie but the flare drove me crazy.  I don’t mind it as an occasional mood setter but too much gets in the way of seeing the action.

I get it.  I get it.  There are a lot of bright lights on the ship and  alot of shooting into suns &  stars so naturally there will be some flare but come on!

You are funny. I take it you are looking for more than “light refracted through glass”? J.J. says, it “…implies there’s something extraordinary happening just off camera. It makes me feel like I’m not watching the average moment.” [ASC, June '09] I like it. I love flare myself. Oh, and ask Michael Bay why he adds flare and he’ll probably say “Cause it looks like a rock video.” Or, “what’s flare?”
