Randomness: A Few Thoughts on the Golden Globes
Chick 1 says:
The Golden Globes were Sunday night and while I didn’t do a blow by blow blog (& probably won’t for the Oscars either) I will offer a few scattered ramblings.
First off, of course I’m thrilled that my boy Downey Jr won Best Actor in Comedy/Musical for Sherlock Holmes. It’s great to see him so happy & his charming speech was one of the highlights of the night. But while his performance was awesome, I’m not sure he should have won. At this point, the only other performance I’ve seen is Gordon-Levitt in (500) Days of Summer which was just as deserving.
Which brings me to another fav actor, Mr. Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This was his first major nomination and he appeared to be the lone representative of his film at the ceremony. Everytime the camera cut to him, he had a huge grin on his face and was clapping away. It was obvious he was just happy to be there. Go Joseph! Hope this is the first of many successes for you.
Happy to see Drew (Barrymore) finally receive an award and happy to see composer Michael Giacchino honored as well. He has done some beautiful work, including the gorgeous score for Star Trek this year.
Finally, I have to comment on both the choices for Best Picture. I haven’t seen The Hangover. Maybe it is amazingly funny. But is it really higher quality than the oh-so-original (500) Days of Summer? And for Best Drama…Avatar? Really? I confess, I haven’t seen any of its competitors and it does seem that everyone in the entire world has seen Avatar. Yes, it was an enjoyable film but I don’t think it’s a Best Picture by any means! The plot was really pedestrian. In the end, it seems that the Hollywood Foreign Press simply voted with the box office. Tsk, tsk.

JGL wasn’t the only one there, he was at a table with others from 500 Days. I noticed the director Marc Webb was on one side of him, and what I believe was one of the producers was on his right, and I didn’t see a shot of them in the hall, but on the red carpet I saw the two writers. And btw, John Lithgow tweeted how it’s been ten years since the time he, Joe, and 3rd Rock won a Globe together TEN years ago. So it wasn’t his first time there at all!

Thanks for the correction, Sally. I thought (500) Days seemed under represented. I actually did some research on Gordon-Levitt’s award history, but obviously not enough. He still totally had that “I’m nominated for a Golden Globe!” grin. I’m sure the alcohol helped enhance that grin.
