Well prior to its Birkin bag grew into the worldwide phenomenon, Hermes introduced the Haut à Courroies, better recognized as HAC bag. The title roughly means as “tall handles”, while the piece is commonly considered the predecessor of the celebrated Birkin bag.
The Fascinating Heritage Behind the HAC
Hermes originated as a equestrian maker during those nineteenth century, so its Haut à Courroies was originally made in those 1890s to help horsemen who needed to transport riding gear and boots. Its deep structure with elevated handles rendered the bag practical during trips. Generations later, the very blueprint inspired the refined Birkin, which appeared during 1984.

Main Characteristics of an HAC
The HAC bag keeps numerous elements with the Birkin, like the cover, closures, lock closure, cadenas, plus clochette. Yet, it stands clearly more vertical, with a more tapered profile and higher handles. This gives it a slightly more relaxed yet refined look.
Measurements & Choices
An HAC generally appears across roomier formats compared to many Birkins, commonly like 32 cm, 36 cm, 40 cm, or occasionally larger voyage models. The 32 cm and 36 models serve nicely for regular carrying, while its bigger versions serve overnight getaways.
Popular Finishes
Hermès produces the HAC from a variety of fine hides. Togo leather and Clémence leather remain favorites thanks to their toughness plus soft grain. Structured leathers such as Epsom keep form well, while precious leathers or fabric editions also appear from year to time.
Haut à Courroies vs the Birkin: Major Contrasts
While the two designs seem related on initial look, a few features keep these bags apart. An HAC is taller and an tighter top, whereas the Birkin looks broader with a more balanced form. An HAC bag’s straps stand further up, allowing it more comfortable for hold over hand. Some enthusiasts also regard an HAC as a more understated pick, because fewer people instantly spot the bag.
How You Can Buy a HAC
Similar to other Hermes leather bags, an HAC remains not often shown directly inside stores. Shoppers usually need establish a rapport alongside an sales associate. A further path involves a secondhand sector, in which trusted resellers sell authenticated bags. Always request professional appraisal before purchasing any secondhand bag.
Would an HAC Valuable as an Investment?
For numerous enthusiasts, an HAC bag delivers a ideal blend of history, function, plus craftsmanship. The exclusivity tends to help hold healthy market worth, though prices can vary based on size, colour, plus market trends.
Closing Words
The Hermès HAC is more beyond merely a larger Birkin bag. This bag is the original masterpiece which started a tradition. For those who value history, function, and understated sophistication, the HAC bag earns an close look.
