Trailer Trash: Heath Ledger’s Last Performance

You probably already know that when Heath Ledger died tragically two years ago, he was in the middle of filming the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.  The creative team behind the film, led by director Terry Gilliam, came up with what I think was an inspired solution to losing their star.  Apparently, the story involved Ledger’s character going through a mirror (a la Alice) three times.  When Ledger died, he had completed filming almost all the scenes on one side of the mirror.  For his three visits to the other side, Gilliam hired three actors who all been friends with Ledger, to play the character on each of his visits, claiming that moving through the mirror changes one’s appearance.   The actors all donated their earnings to the trust fund for Ledger’s daughter.

The movie opened Christmas day but I’m just now taking a peek.  It looks right up my alley.  And I’m psyched to see all four performances of the leads.  My only concern is that I’ve never really been a fan of Terry Gilliam.  He tends to be too dark for me.  Your thoughts?

I’m totally intrigued by the way they solved the problem of losing a lead actor. And I love the part where the other actors stepped in and donated their earnings. Classy.
