Chick 1 says
:
I wanted to post this a week ago so I could kick off the summer. I know summer is supposed to start Memorial Day weekend or, if you’re a stickler, June 21st, but I’m talking about the summer according to Hollywood. This may not be quite as big a movie summer as last year but there’s still some great stuff on the way. For this post, let’s just take a look at May.
Wolverine: I know, I know. This has already opened but it was a really big opening and it truly kicked off the summer movie season, occupying the spot that Iron Man occupied last year. I was always on the fence about this one & didn’t see it. Opened May 1st. You can see Chick 2′s review here.

Star Trek: This is one of two that are at the top of my list this summer. J.J. Abrams, amazing cast, and the trailers just keep on kicking ass! All the fanboys are aflutter and this fangirl is too. Abrams may make a Trekkie of me yet. Check out my previous rantings about this movie here. Opens May 8th.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gty9tLOXpwk]
The Brothers Bloom: This quirky little movie opens in limited release. Rachel Weisz is becoming another fav actress and I love the tone of the trailer. Could be a very fun movie if it doesn’t go too dark. Opens May 15th.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HPXfmqIy-4]
Terminator Salvation: I’ve been back and forth about this one. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Terminator movies. But I did think McG, who directs this, did a fun job with the Charlie’s Angels movies and, of course, there’s the matter of Christian Bale. This is another one that has all the fanboys aflutter. I predict it will be very popular & make a killing. I just don’t know how I’ll like it. Opens May 22nd.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_hIIDEQY3w]
Easy Virtue: Another little film, British this time, opening in limited release. It opens the same weekend as Terminator so it will be crushed. But it looks like it might be more up my alley. Great cast and set in one of my favorite time periods. Opens May 22nd.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDgWWH2xyeQ]
Up: And finally, a new film from Pixar. Pixar has an amazing record. They are great animators but what really makes their pictures stand out is that they are great storytellers. They understand the whole gamut from the basic tenets of narrative to the finer details of subtext and character. That may sound snootty for an animated movie but great storytelling applies to all genres. It’s what makes the difference between Babe and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. The ads have been what you’d expect; quirky, delightful, a little mysterious, and I love the dog! And does anyone else think the bad guy looks just like Kirk Douglas? Very much looking forward to this one. Opens May 29th.

SAN FRANCISCO/SEOUL, March 23 (Reuters) – LG Energy
Solution (LGES), a supplier for electric car makers Tesla and Lucid, said on Thursday in Korea it plans to invest 1.7 trillion Korean won ($1.4 billion) to build a battery factory in Arizona by 2024 to meet demand from
“prominent startups” and other North American customers.
This will be its first U.S. factory to make cylindrical cells,
a type of battery that has been used in Tesla and Lucid vehicles, LGES said.
Construction will begin in the second quarter of 2022, with mass production to start in 2024 with production capacity of
11 gigawatt hours, LGES said in a statement.
Earlier, Reuters reported that potential customers would include
EV makers Tesla, Lucid and Proterra and Philip
Morris , maker of IQOS heated-tobacco sticks, among others.
The report cited people familiar with the matter.
LGES said in a statement that it plans to consider
securing additional production capacity at its Arizona factory in the future.
“The Arizona factory could add further production capacity in the future as we are seeing growing demand for cylindrical batteries from various customers, including automakers and power tool makers,” said an official at LGES.
On Tuesday, Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said battery production would be “the limiting factor” for vehicle production in two to three years.
He has called on suppliers to raise production, while Tesla starts making cells itself.
Tesla, Lucid and Proterra did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Philip Morris declined to comment.
Japan’s Panasonic Corp, a Tesla supplier, along with Contemporary Amperex
Technology Co Ltd, is also looking to invest billions
of dollars to build a factory to make a new type of
electric vehicle (EV) battery for Tesla, public
broadcaster NHK reported this month.
Panasonic is looking at building the factory in either Oklahoma or Kansas, not
far from Tesla’s new Texas vehicle plant, NHK
reported.
Lucid Chief Financial Officer Sherry House told Reuters last month the company, which
has a car factory in Arizona, had signed multi-year supply agreements with two battery suppliers, and the agreement “does have some capacity coming from state-side cell lines.”
She did not identify the companies. Lucid sources
batteries from LGES and Samsung SDI.
LGES, which raised more than $10 billion in its initial public offering in Korea in January, has announced a
flurry of battery joint ventures with GM and Stellantis in the
United States and Canada.
In August, U.S. President Joe Biden signed an executive order aimed at making half
of all new vehicles sold in 2030 electric. (Reporting by Hyunjoo Jin and Heekyong Yang.
