Review: X-Men Origins Wolverine

Or, How I Became Wolverine.  Or, What the X-Men Did Before Charles Xavier. Or, …  You get the point.  I suppose if I were a 25-year-old male who had grown up reading about the spandex clad Wolverine this movie would have thrilled me.  As it is, it was a slightly disappointing opening to the summer movie season.  Read the rest of this entry »

Yay!  One of my I Can’t Wait movies is out!  Robert Downey Jr. , Joe Wright, & Jamie Foxx.  Sigh.  I am happy.

What I Liked: This really is a touching powerful story.  Read the rest of this entry »

Review: Princess Mononoke

I’ve been wanting to explore a bit of Asian cinema, especially anime.  Many of them fall in my favorite genre, fantasy/scifi.  This movie, about a cursed prince who travels west to ask the Forest Spirit to heal him, had made quite a few Top Ten lists the year it was released.  It also has a lushous soundtrack that I had heard on the internet. Review: State of Play

Chick 1 says:stateofplay1

Finally!  Back in a theater after being thwarted by my schedule, my budget, & the lack of movies I actually want to see being released.  State of Play wasn’t really high on my must list but it has a great cast so The Flick Chicks gave it a look-see. Read the rest of this entry »

Chick 1 says:stranger-than-fiction

In honor of April 15th, I’m posting this review of Stranger than Fiction.  I’ve not viewed it recently but I own it & it’s one of my favorites.  If you’ve already completed your mad dash to the post office, swing by the video store & pick up a copy.  Or come by my apartment & borrow mine.  I’ll be watching Lost.   Sshhh.  No talking. Review: The Scarlet Pimpernel

Posted in Reviews, The 1980s at 9:01 pm by admin

Chick 1 says:scarlettpimpernel

I have loved the television version of The Scarlet Pimpernel since high school.  It came out 27 years ago.  And I am officially old.

What I Liked:  This is romance at its best.  Intrigue, adventure, agonizing obstacles.  There are moments in the story when you want to yell at the screen, “Turn around!”  or “Tell him!”  Sigh.  Read the rest of this entry »

Review: Michael Clayton

Having seen Good Night and Good Luck on my RDJ list, I decided to add some George Clooney movies to my queue.  And this Oscar nominated thriller was next.

What I Liked: Quite a lot.  This is an intelligent, smooth thriller.  The story quietly moves along letting the tension rumble beneath the surface.  Read the rest of this entry »

In my continuing quest to see the movies of Robert Downey Jr, I came across this ensemble piece directed by George Clooney, based on the true story of Edward Murrow’s confrontation with Senator Joseph McCarthy. Read the rest of this entry »

Review: Taken

Posted in Reviews, The 2000s at 11:23 pm by Chick 1

Chick 2 says:taken

In the trailer, Liam Neeson promises he will hunt down his daughter’s kidnapper, and he indeed delivers on his promise, and Taken delivers the action.  It is a pretty straightforward movie with lots of great stunts, the right amount of suspense, and not too violent. Read the rest of this entry »
